Double-sided print and cut in SS

January 18, 2013 by Kay

Once you’ve mastered print and cut with the Silhouette, the next logical step is double-sided print and cut. I see a lot of questions about this so I decided to make a video on how I do it. So many possibilities once you know the tricks!

Is there any way, in silhouette, to align shapes to a shape that doesn’t move? in your video you used the little rectangle to center shapes but when I do this all the shapes seem to move, including the one that was aligned where I wanted it, in the first place. Great videos!

Haven’t found the convention that works yet. If the bar moves I just leave everything selected and then use the arrow keys to nudge it back into place.

That’s what I’ve been doing, too, but I find it really annoying. Although, if that’s my only complaint I guess I’m doing OK! LOL.

I put in a request to Silhouette product development about this. Maybe they’ll fix it in a future update.

Thanks. Suggesting to Silhouette is a great idea!

Wow! You know, I woudn’t have even considered the possbility of being able to do this. It’s a good thing some people (you, for instance) think outside the box. This really has me thinking now – thanks for the inspiration.

I use Corel Draw a lot (I’m probably the only one in the world who still uses it!) and when aligning objects the last object selected remains stationary.

Thanks, I haven’t been able to figure out the convention in SS yet. I’ll double check that.

Thanks for this tutorial – when you print direct from SS – are there any margins that can make things off centred when it comes to cutting something that you’ve printed back to back? Just a ‘thinking out loud’ kind of question.

    Thanks again

Good question, Paula, but I have already accounted for that. So no, not if you follow the exact steps in the video.

Thank you so much! I love this! How marvelous to save on extra steps and paper. This will be one of my new favorite techniques to use in Studio. Bless you and your brilliance. Big thankful hugs, Debbie ๐Ÿ™‚

Fab tutorial, Kay! Thanks so much for the clear explanation – I wouldn’t have even thought about attempting double-sided printing like this at all. How fabulous!

Thank you so much! I am waiting for my Silhouette Cameo to arrive and I am sure there is a learning curve from the Cricut!

My double-sided tags worked perfectly! It was more complex than your examples, but your tips gave me a great starting point. This tutorial was perfect timing, as I’ve never felt the need to make double-sided print & cuts until this one.

Great video! I used to create double-sided cards in CorelDraw. However, being able to create more complicated designs (like your window card example) in SS is very exciting. What paper do you use for double-sided PNC? I’m currently using cardstock from my printer’s manufacturer, which is only printable on one side (the other side is noticeably darker).

I also use Corel Draw and still learning as I just got my Cameo and Designer software. Thanks for the video.

    Hi Kay!

Thanks for posting this video! It was a huge help when I decided to make double sided tags for some of the products I make. However, I have watched this video 3 times and attempted it like 12… and I am still having issues with things aligning correctly. Have you had any issues with your token example? I am essentially making a page full of circular tags. I have calibrated my machine, paid careful attention to how it loads into my printer and I still only get maybe 2 out of 8 tags that actually cut centered. I don’t know what I am doing wrong!! Any tips would be greatly appreciated! =]

All the single sided print and cut rules apply, so make sure go through the whole checklist. Also you should be able to hold the double sided print up to the light to see if the designs are lining up with each other.

Thanks so much for your informative tutorial! Just wondering if there’s a way to do this with a printer that will automatically print double sided instead of having to re-feed the first printed page back into the printer.

    Thanks for your help!

not directly, because Silh Studio doesn’t support multipage documents. You could create PDF for each side, then merge the PDFs into a single 2 page PDF, but unless you were going to do a lot of the same one over time, that would probably not be worth the effort.
