Hold off on latest Silhouette Studio update

April 29, 2016 by Kay

Please note that this article is being updated frequently so be sure to read all the way to the bottom.

As of  Tuesday 4/26, version 3.7.206 became the current version of Silhouette Studio. My advice is that you DO NOT UPDATE at this time. It is a major change in that it requires you to participate in the new Silhouette Cloud in order to use the Library. We have received no information on exactly what this entails and early adopters have experienced issues with lost files and disorganized libraries. You might also want to join me in letting [email protected] know that you want any cloud features to be optional and that we need more information ahead of major software changes. I’ll keep you posted …

Update: Thanks to all of you that have contacted Silhouette. We have gotten some clarification today and things are sounding more encouraging as the info (we should have had beforehand) is made available. This was posted to the Silh site today (Friday) http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/faq/solution/silhouette-cloud

Update 4/30: I still have a few important unanswered questions in to Silhouette, but the amazing Terri Johnson has a great post that has certainly soothed my nerves.

Update 5/1: Jin Yong and I tend to think a lot alike when it comes to how software ought to work. And, like me, she’s not afraid to tell you like it is. Please check out Jin’s detailed review.

Kay’s position as of now is that version 3.7 doesn’t seem to be anything nefarious, nor does it seem to be quite ready for release. I would wait for a bug fix version if you want to participate in the cloud.

Update 5/10: The bug fix version, 3.7.212 is out. I have been unable to install it due to multiple errors, crashes and failures, and have heard many similar reports. Still can not recommend updating at this time.

Thank you for the heads-up – I truly would love to have the option – cloud-based has been disastrous for Cricut IMHO and I don’t want to have the same troubles with my Cameo.

To me that would have been a disaster, as I am in the middle of doing a show with orders and if I could not have delivered those files I would have been in trouble. Thank you so much

Thx for the info In my tiny opinion and brief 3 yr experience this company is failing their customers

This doesn’t seem right. Not everyone has Cloud. Personally I couldn’t get on with it at all and removed it. I’d be stuck now so thanks.

Done! and posted copy of email on their facebook page as well.
    Thanks for the warning 🙂

I just sent a brief, friendly note saying that I don’t want to be required to participate in cloud services. Thanks so much for the notice!

I have commented on the support page that the mandatory use of the cloud is wrong and that I do not want to use it. I also expressed my feelings that major changes should be presented to the users at least 3 months prior to the update release so that they may receive feedback.

Thanks for the warning – in view of that I shall not be installing the upgrade. We do need to have an option, but Silhouette never seem to take into account their customer’s opinions.

Thanks for the update. Cloud saving is great at times, but I want the choice to be able to use it or not.

Thank you so much for the heads up! I would have been very very unhappy had I found it out the “hard way”. I looked at the release notes and it makes mention of Silhouette Cloud, but not the details of what they did.

Thanks for the heads up. I usually wait to do updates but sometimes I update it without thinking about it. It is so great of you to let us know about these things.

Thanks for the heads up . I’m not a fan of any “cloud” features myself, especially when they are forced, with no other options. I, too, will wait for your recommendations ! Thanks

Thank you for this Information, i think Cloud should be Optional and we are not being given enough time from them telling us that there is a new Up-Date and the up-Date Date being given

Thank you Kay for this important information.

Thanks Kay. Sent them an email. The reason I left Cricut is it is now all internet based. My internet is too slow to design online.

Thank you very much Kay I certainly don’t want to use the cloud storage, and maybe lose all the files I have paid for. I will not add the update.
