I found a way to print on chipboard with the help of my Cricut. I cut the tag shapes I wanted surrounded by a CD shape. Then I take them off the mat, load them into the CD tray of my inkjet printer and print.
CD printing is highly precise so this also works for printing precisely onto small paper shapes.
Download the chipboard printing templates and instructions here.
Update: SVG version of CD tray insert has been added.

Kay,
That chipboard looks awfully thick. Did you cut it with the Cricut?
Yes I did. It is cereal box (from grape nuts … a little thicker than normal cereal box) and I had no trouble cutting it. Taped down the edges and used blade depth 6 and multicut 3.
WHAT a good idea! That saves a step from printing on paper and adhering it to the chipboard shape. I have an HP desktop with LightScribe, which lets one burn an image into the top of a specially-coated (and outrageously overpriced) CD or DVD. I wonder if the laser would leave any marks on chipboard…If. we didn’t use that PC for a media center, I might actually risk fire to try it. LOL
Kimberly I too have light Scribe on my laptop, have never used it though. I wonder if it would work, or start a fire… Let us know if you try it! Although I have an HP printer it doesn’t have the cd print feature.
what printer did you use that prints on cds and is there an attachment for other printer models.
There are many printers and all-in-ones that print on CDs. I have 2 Epsons that do and my parents have an HP that does. Neither of us were shoppng for that feature. Some Canon printers have the capability but it is not activated on US models. If you have an HP or Epson, check to be sure you don’t already have this capability. If you have a Canon, check this link for details

Awesome! My Canon has a CD printer and the insert to hold them- and I’m hoping being out of the US that it is enabled. I’ve never used it, but I’m going to dig it out to see if I can get it to work. Thanks for sharing- you have the coolest ideas! 🙂
Kay,
You amazed me yet again. I am so excited I got a new HP printer back at Christmas time and it has a cd printer tray. I thought I would never use it but after seeing this I know I will. Your are the BEST!! Thanks so much
Lysa
What a clever idea…LOL
Not sure if I have the CD printing capibility but I can see how it would be very useful
Great idea and thank you for the excellent Canon link. Looks like I can enable the feature on my Pixma. Yeah!
What a great idea. I can’t wait to try this. I have this on my Epson printer, but have never used it so I hope that it is easy to learn.
Thanks!
Whitney
good post,
Thanks for this post, Some much needed info!
Wow, you are amazing. I am new to the SCAL/SVG/digital scrapbooking world and really overwhelmed. I consider myself very intelligent but this stuff just overwhelms me making me very thankful for people like you who not only share your knowledge so freely but also push boundaries and try new things. Thanks for your help.
I just came accross this and I have a black cat cutter and I use Inkscape/signcut. Do you have the CD file in SVG? I would love to do something like this. thanks!!!
Good idea, Andrea. Just added the SVG for you.
Thank you soooo much!!!!
