Make your own Curio mats

March 29, 2017 by Kay

I like to make my own customized mats for some of my Curio projects, and even though its a pretty simple process, I put together a video to show you how. I also include a lot of ideas on ways to put together a mat tailored for your particular project.

Here are the files I promised in the videos:

Free .studio file for cutting Curio mat pattern with a Cameo is here. Please note that every machine cuts differently and you may need to tweak this file for your Cameo.

Free .studio file for drawing Curio grid lines with a Curio is here. Note: Be sure you check “Cut to Edge” under Preferences>Defaults so that the full grid will draw.

Mat dimensions:
~10-1/16 inches x 7-5/16 inches

Punches needed:
-1/4 inch circle (standard office hole punch)

-3/16 inch or 4mm circle

Recommended Media:
Flexible cutting mats, Dollar Tree
Plastic poster board, Michaels
Silhouette Chipboard

Another great post Kay, particularly like the shim idea. I was reading something connected for the embossing mats just the other day – the site is in German, but google translate helped me out. https://miriamkreativ.de/freebies/diy-praegematte-fuer-die-silhouette-curio/

Thanks for posting this link, Nadine, as it hadn’t come up in my research. Guess I’m going to have to start searching in German and Dutch. Or maybe just ask you! Miss you on the Silh UK blog!

I wish we had had more time at ATS to chat. I had already tagged your video on embossing to play with later. And my mind is reeling with this information about custom mats. I have big issues with the Curio cutting mat for the same reason you do….testing it for polymer clay and other materials just eat up the mats. I have torn off the cutting mat, drawn the grid on and then covered with clear Con-tac paper. I hadn’t thought about cutting mats…great idea!
    Thanks for sharing this info!

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I just ordered the Curio to go along with the Cameo. I’ll be looking for more of your Curio tutorials. I did take screen shots while watching the video so I could have the instructions in hand.

Do you have a templet to place the blank to make braclets?

I do not. But I do have a playlist on how to make and use your own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GUu4naO9fM&list=PLNOKWD0cY3j3WtNrLyHnq9k0uLM4ZgwtU

Kay, I was just looking at this post and your Silhouette Chipboard link doesn’t work properly. I thought I’d let you know. Thanks for posting this! I’m going to save it for when I need it!
