What we know is that without a new (3.3.622 or higher)/patched version(2.9.67), after June 22, you will not be able to:
1) Shop through Silhouette Studio
2) Download purchases
3) Activate a new upgrade (to DE or BE)
4) Reactivate an existing upgrade if necessary
5) Restore your library using V3’s File>Library>Import library (this is not confirmed but it does require server interaction)
If you do not update, your existing upgrades and store purchases will remain in place.
Everything else in Silhouette Studio should remain unchanged and run fine (perhaps better and faster without internet interference).
-There was/is already posted a version 3.3.638 for Win that works fully going forward. This is the second third iteration, as version 3.3.622 and version 3.3.632 failed to open for many Windows users.
–The latest version for Mac that works going forward is incorrectly labeled 3.3.638 but will install as 3.3.631 (you will see this after install) so autoupdate incorrectly reports a newer version available, when there is not. The current Mac download is correctly labeled but is no different from 3.3.631. An identical to 3.3.631, but now labeled 3.3.638, is available for Mac.
– There are many people on the Windows side who can not get 3.3.632 to open and SA is working that. The problem seems to be related to graphics card drivers. Update: 3.3.638 seems to have solved the opening problem, there are other issues being worked, and limited information as this is brand new.
-3.3.631/2/8 have not corrected existing issues with sluggishness, preference errors, diagonal draw bug, Mac resource hogging, etc. Please keep pressing SA for fixes!
-3.3.632/8 will not work with Win XP
-SA has promised a patch version of V2, to be called the Heritage version, for those who would like to remain with version 2. We plan to hold them to this promise. Update: the patched version of 2.9.45, now version 2.9.67 is available for download here.
–Default cut settings for various materials has changed as of 3.3.632. A headsup to those who are not diligent about writing down your own preferred settings (and you know who you are).
My recommendations
-back up your library and license file immediately if you have not already. This way you can restore your own store files and DE/BE license if you need to, independent of SA servers. The location of these files can be found here.
–if you do not wish to update your software, you don’t have to. Please let [email protected] know that you will not be shopping at the store until your preferred version is supported. (If you have a subscription, respectfully request a fee suspension until your preferred version is supported.) Note: You will still be able to support many of your favorite designers through their web sites, Etsy stores, etc. and I hope that you will do so.
-if you do not mind updating, try 3.3.638 and if it works you are good to go. If not, roll back and sit tight for SA to fix things. Windows users may want to make sure their graphics card drivers are up to date first. Really, there is no rush and you can wait and see if things stabiiize if you like.
-for Mac users it is fairly simple to install more than one version of Silhouette Studio so this is a good alternative. Win users who are computer savvy may want to consider this option as well.
-don’t forget you have plenty of options, including Sure Cuts A Lot and Make the Cut. Do not be pressured to make a change you do not want to make.
SA’s FAQ is here. (Note:This is a fluid document that has already changed at least 4 times that I am aware of.)

Before I updated, I saved my DE license to a flashdrive. When I updated, I lost my DE license on my legacy edition. I saved it like Kelly directed, but for some reason, my DE is gone from the legacy but is on the V3 I downloaded. How do I go back to my flashdrive and get my DE license back for my 2.9.45? Thanks.
Kay says
The reason we have you back it up is because V3 strips it out of earlier versions. All you need to do is copy it from your flash drive back into that same location on your hard drive. Try again to set it to read only as Kelly instructs to keep that from happening again.

Somehow I managed to sign up for emails for replies and I’d rather come to the blog to read them. How do I undo whatever I did?
Barbara says
It looks like we need to open our Silhouette software every day to see if there are more “redo” updates. A couple of days ago i installed an update of 3.3.631ssde . I thought I was ok. Today I opened my Silhouette software program and got a message there were updates for my software . When I clicked on it I found Now there is another update this time it is to 3.3.638ssde ( apparently 638 replaces 631) . I downloaded it . I wish SA would send emails to alert us to these frequent updates. It is hard to keep track when there are so many of them .

I made the mid tske an downloaded the patch for ver2. Thought all went well? Program not behaving so t let me delete search words. Keep getting an error message when I try place file on my mat. Very sluggish. Should I doe loafed the patch again? Trying to restore computer. What a mess..frustrated!
Marion says
Sorry for all the typos…either auto correct or my arthritis?
Celeste says
Just for the record, I spent 2 hours today trying to update my Silhouette Studio Designer Edition 2.9.45d to the legacy v.2 that supposedly had the patch only to find out that it doesn’t. I ended up with the 2.9.67 version after following the instructions from the Silhouette representative during a chat. This version is very buggy and, as stated, I can’t connect to the store. I’m quite frustrated and unhappy. So, if anyone is considering doing the same, my advice is, don’t!
Gigi says
So sorry for your “pain.” I decided early this morning that I just didn’t think I could handle the frustration of an update not working properly, so I am going to buy artwork/cut files from other sources. Simply am not going to upgrade. I enjoy my Silhouette just as it is–period!
Marion says
Why do they release patches that are buggy for some?
Celeste says
A follow-up; opened my Silhouette studio software again and, voila, the store feature has magically appeared. Program is still somewhat sluggish and I haven’t tried cutting anything yet but at least I have connectivity. Does this make me as happy as I was prior to this fiasco? No, but at least it’s better than it was when I last posted.
Doreen says
I just noticed this forced update tonight and frantically tried to use up my $300 in store credit. Too late. SS software wouldn’t download. The notice about this change was so small on top of the website that I hadn’t noticed it until tonight. I searched the internet and was happy to find this information. My question is, will customer support assist in allowing me to access my purchase if I don’t wish to upgrade? I will be cancelling or suspending my subscription as my primary use is to convert the files to svg and cut with my Klic N Kut.
Mandy Moore says
Hi Kay, I’m still on the legacy version. Previously, I had a work-around with an early version that let me save SS files as svgs. Can we still do that with the patch version we now have to install? If so, can you tell me how (or where I can go to find out)?
Kay says
The patch version will not save as SVG, but it can be your second or 3rd version of a multiple install.

I just upgraded Monday night and since then, some of my files have different fonts and all the fonts and images are all jagged. I have been calling Silhouette for days with no way to talk to someone – it just says we are busy and you can email us for assistance. I have emailed and get replies timely for a bit and then nothing. I really need this fixed to complete orders for next week. The one solution they thought, as I am reading in here is the graphic driver. I did the update on that last night and still it did not change the fonts or images, still all jagged. I see above there is another link for graphic driver updates, so I will try that this afternoon – otherwise, I am to the point where I can’t wait anymore and need to buy a new laptop and try that. But then I am worried that I won’t get the software loaded or all my files copied over to the new one – OR if they still are jagged on the new laptop! Had I known this would happen and I can’t finish orders this week, I would have never upgraded. I thought we HAD to upgrade by Tuesday, so I did. 🙁 So frustrated.
Celeste says
I got a phone call from SilhouetteAmerica and it was suggested that I update my graphics card (?) and completely wipe the program from my computer and download it again. This was supposed to help with the sluggishness of the patched version. After losing all the patterns I had created in Illustrator and put in a desktop folder, I tried to drag them back into Silhouette Studio only to discover that a number of them which had white backgrounds are now displaying as grey. Could the files have been corrupted? Any ideas/thought would be appreciated.
Sandra (Alicante) says
Hi Kay, I don’t use Make the Cut but I do use Sure Cuts A Lot these days. All I can say is that although not perfect, it is not the same animal that V3 was – it has improved beyond compare. It is constantly being updated and bugs ironed out fast. I use Studio only for a friend who uses it too, so I’m not going to bother updating unless there is an improvement on it!
Crafty Queen (Cindy Bartkowiak) says
Kay, I have downloaded the legacy file and it will not let me install it, I get a pop up that states I have the current version. Or do I need to uninstall the original (forced update) that I did not want to do, go and reinstall my old version, and then do the legacy update????
Kay says
If you have Windows, then yes I believe you do have to uninstall the newer versions first and install from newest to oldest, but I’m not an expert on the Win process.
Janet Tweedy says
WELL DONE to Graphtec UK who emailed me with a proper working download for the upgrade, they replied really fast and said they knew there had been issues with the other site. So I now presumably have a proper basic program, which i won’t see as I have the designer and the Corel versions anyway 🙂 BUT I seem to be able to access the shop once more.
HURRAY for Graphtec 🙂
Barbara says
Not sure if it is on my end or not, but the Store is a mess! The free image for the week is not there. IF I click on it I am taken to the “All Designs pages” If I click on a paid image it reverts back to “All Designs” pages I did try downloading one file and it worked .
I have the latest V3 version with Designer .
I am not tech savvy and these on going software problems will certainly discourage me from buying any more Silhouette equipment
Janet Tweedy says
My Avast antivirus and Chrome do not trust the new update! Every time I go online I get a solemn warning that a new update will be able to change my Chrome settings
Never had that before for any other update.
Gigi says
Not sure that my problems are related since I’ve not updated my 2.9.45d, but I am finding that I can click on an item in my library until the cows come home and it won’t open on my mat. I’m having to take a screen shot, save it to my desktop and drag it into studio. I then trace the item to get my cut lines. I’m trying to decorate my granddaughter’s trunk for church camp. So, all the phrases that I have purchased and have stored are proving to be more work than I’ve ever wanted to do. I’m thinking SA is slowing down this version on purpose. I was assured that things would work as normal with previously purchased artwork until I was ready to upgrade, but now I’m somewhat suspicious! Like a previous person who commented, I’m not so sure I want to continue doing business with SA.

When I download the update and try to install it keeps telling me that the archive is corrupted and I can’t proceed.
Pattie Carlson says
I’ve been banging my head on my desk for nearly a month trying to figure out this “archive is corrupted” problem. So, tonight I cleared the history and cash on my browser, closed my browser, opened the Silhouette program, went to the Silhouette store. When prompted, I downloaded the update, and the update worked just fine. When I tried to download my pending order, it did say that I couldn’t connect to server. I tried connecting one more time and it worked fine. Hope this helps.
Joan says
Updated to v.3.3.632 without problems. Tried to update to v3.3.638 but Avast antivirus blocks update with message win32:Evo-gen(susp) virus . Silhouette say to turn off virus checker to allow update but Avast has never blocked Silhouette updates before and I am very reluctant to do this. Tried emailing Avast for help but have received no reply. Has anyone else got this problem?
Kay says
If 3.3.632 is working there is no need for you to go to 3.3.638. I am hearing that this is a valid virus warning that should not be ignored.
Janet Tweedy says
I get this Joan, I also have avast, so took the download page link and put it into my allowable sites, . downloaded it without a problem and seems to work fine 🙂
However get a warning from chrome that the link to the studio shop “may allow a security breach or something ” I suspect that’s the bit they’ve added for safe buying and ‘knowing’ who is accessing the files?
Chose to ignore this and the bottom hasn’t dropped out of my cameo so happy at ther moment. Mind you the new Silhouette Curio will start me wanting to upgrade I daresay, along with new glitches 🙂
Joan says
Many, many thanks for your reply and I will certainly heed your warning. The only thing is with version 3.3.632 I am unable to buy designs via the software from the online store but rather that than an infected computer.
Kay says
3.3.632 was the second version with the new protocol so it should work with the store.
Joan says
Hi Kay, I too thought that this update should work with the store but when I access the store via the software I am getting a message in red
‘please note: for the best experience, if you are using a windows machine, it is recommended that you browse the silhouette design store outside of the software (www.silhouettedesignstore.com). You can then download your orders by going to file-download pending orders in the software. We apologise for the inconvenience.’
Can’t understand why I am getting this message and what it means.
Kay says
You can shop the store from your browser, which is, IMHO, the best way to do it anyway. Then you only need to connect to the store for the download process.
Joan says
Grateful thanks Kay and Janet for your replies, really appreciate your time and trouble in getting back to me. Feel so much better now. Lesson learnt thought – will certainly show caution when next update appears and take my lead from your excellent site!

I had XP on my laptop, tried to upgrade and then could not open the software. I backed up my library from the documents/settings folder. I now have a new lap top which has Win 8.1 on it. I can’t work out how to import my library. All I have read just tells you how to move it from one computer to another with the same version of windows. Have you any idea how to move the backed up library from one version or windows to another?
Kay says
You need to put copy your backed up library file into the correct location for Win 8. You can find that file path here. https://app.box.com/files/0/f/0/1/f_10750461715
Joan says
Please could you help as I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere. I have silhouette designer edition upgrade installed on my laptop and wonder if I can also run it on my desktop. If so, how do I go about getting it onto my desktop?
Janet Tweedy says
I wouldn’t mind finding out if the reverse can be done! I have it on my desktop computer and also Corel connection so would love to get it on my laptop so I can work whilst away.
Kay says
Silhouette Studio Designer Edition can be activated on 3 computers at a time (laptop/desktop/WIn/Mac doesn’t matter). Simply install Silhouette Studio, then enter your key code under the Help menu. You can find your key code under the my account section of the Silhouette web site.
Joan says
Many, many thanks – I can’t tell you how long I have been trying to find this out. You are a wonderful woman!
